From Baltimore to NYC, Cultivating Diversity in Ballet

We are thrilled for Full Circle Dance Company Artistic Director Donna L. Jacobs, who has been selected as a 2022-2023 School of American Ballet National Visiting Fellow. As director of the Morton Street Dance Center, Donna has for more than three decades been committed to providing training opportunities for young dancers in the Baltimore area, especially dancers of color.

"I am so honored to be part of this program that brings together ballet teachers from around the country who are committed to training students from diverse backgrounds," Jacobs said. "Artists are always, always learning and growing, and I relish this opportunity for collaboration and creativity." Jacobs spent a week in New York working with SAB faculty, joined by four other SAB National Visiting Fellows selected for the program. "It was absolutely energizing to engage with such extraordinary artists, to exchange knowledge and ideas about teaching, and to be a part of a shared commitment to cultivating diversity in ballet," she said. She will return for an additional week in the spring. Morgan James, a former student of Donna Jacobs who now teaches at Morton Street Dance Center, performs with Full Circle Dance Company, and will dance the Arabian solo in Morton Street's 2023 Nutcracker, says, "Since I was six years old, Ms. Donna has always pushed me to be the best dancer I could be. To this day, she continues to give me opportunities to pour back into the dance community. Ms. Donna and Morton Street have truly been foundational, giving me the discipline, confidence, diligence, and skill that have led me through life."
