18 Guest Artists Join Full Circle to Bring Ancestral Stories to Life

Full Circle Dance Company welcomed 18 guest artists of varied ages and backgrounds to the studio on October 23 to contribute to a powerful new work entitled She Did That!, which honors the diverse stories of real female ancestors. The new work will premiere November 9 as part of Rooted and Rising at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

"The section of the dance featuring community guest artists has a sacred quality," said Full Circle associate artistic director Liz Pelton. "The soundtrack includes the names of actual foremothers, shared with us by people from all walks of life. It is profoundly moving to us as artists--and I think it will be moving for our audience--to see so many people, young and old, representing the experiences of women who defied expectations."

The new work She Did That! will also incorporate a quilt created by fiber artist Jaszmine Howard specifically for the occasion. The names of many ancestors are included in the quilt, providing a tactile connection for the dancers to women of the past.

"These women are not forgotten," said Full Circle Artistic Director Donna L. Jacobs. "Their actions--caring, creating, forging new paths, breaking barriers--continue to impact us. This work uses movement, music, storytelling, and fabric to embody and celebrate those contributions."
