Choreographer Spotlight: Nyah Banks

Full Circle Dance Company's upcoming season features new works from some of Baltimore's most compelling voices in modern dance. Among them is Nyah Banks, a choreographer whose work asks audiences to sit with the complexity of everyday life — and find connection within it. We sat down with Nyah to talk about her new piece, Fractions of Reality, premiering November 1st at the Baltimore Museum of Art as part of Ritual and Revolution.

What is the title of your new work?
The title of my piece is Fractions of Reality.
What impact are you hoping it will have on people who see it? Who do you hope to move or reach?
I hope those who experience my work gain a deeper understanding of the complexity of our individual routines, struggles, and daily lives, and what happens when those realities intersect with the lives of others in our communities. Those encounters can create friction, joy, connection, belonging, and countless other shared experiences.
Why is creating art important to you right now?
Creating art feels especially important to me right now because, more than ever, people need community, meaningful conversation, and a sense of belonging. I hope this piece sparks dialogue, welcomes diverse perspectives, and leaves audience members feeling more connected to one another.
How do you feel about the opportunity to present your work at the Baltimore Museum of Art?
The opportunity to present my work at the BMA with Full Circle dancers and the support of its production resources is one I do not take lightly. I am incredibly grateful to share my work in such a respected space and to collaborate with such talented dancers in bringing this vision to life.
